About
Gabriel Herrera is a NYC-based trombonist, composer, and arranger who has showcased his skills on the trombone at venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Smalls Jazz Club, and Lincoln Center.
The son of an orchestral flutist, his journey started in State College, PA under the tutelage of Mark L. Lusk, professor of trombone at Penn State University. In State College, Herrera saw a multitude of musical opportunities, winning jazz soloist awards from Essentially Ellington and WorldStrides in addition to performing with professional ensembles such as the Zeropoint Big Band and the Keystone Society of Swing and with collegiate ensembles at Juniata College and Penn State University. Culminating in his band touring Europe and performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Herrera's time in Happy Valley came to an end when he moved to New York City to study at Columbia University.
At Columbia, he has performed throughout the city at venues such as Lincoln Center, Smalls Jazz Club, and The Forum in musical idioms such as jazz, funk, rock, pop, and classical. Herrera's breadth of musical experience has led to him performing alongside artists such as Craig Taborn, Chris Washburne, and Ole Mathisen and in masterclasses for people such as Alex Iles, Wycliffe Gordon, and Jon Faddis. Previous teachers include Mark Lusk, David Gibson, and Kevin McManus.
